In 2019, waste was responsible for 4 percent of our total gross emissions. Of these emissions, 94 per cent were biogenic methane generated by the decomposition of organic materials at landfill. Actions to address food and organic waste are a key part of Aotearoa New Zealand’s first Emissions Reduction Plan.
